Wow! Where did you find that font? I just recently got a copy of your book and I am really impressed with the usage of that font!!

keron, there is something fabulously james thurber meets o.henry who both ride horses with keron psillas, so keron can blog about the humor of story, life, and circumstance. i would say these are my favorite images, and THIS is my favorite blog, but i confess to being a fan of the way you live as you are and require nothing more from others.

hats off to you for all that you are and what you teach us. you have been one the most powerful lessons of my life. i am forever grateful to and for you.

keron, i could barely get through this review without seeing your face. actually, the truth is that i really saw myself staring at the back of your head, as you sat at the computer in santa fe designing a book, this miracle of beauty that focus on dominique but to my mind, is all about you. you ride, walk, love, and laugh as you are, and your words in this tome to living in the present are beautiful, compassionate, and transformational like the dragonfly pin you wore.

the review was as moved as all who know you are.

I heard about you through Rick Holt who happened to be on a trip to Myanmar I just returned from. He highly recommended your book “Meditation for two” which I unfortunately found and ordered on Amazon before stumbling across your blog (otherwise I would have ordered it from you directly). Your photography is just wonderful – I can’t wait to get the book! I would love to come to Golega next year, unfortunately I already have a trip planned for next November. Are you going every year? Maybe I’ll be able to join you in 2013.

your book is a collection of pages that reflect who you are, what matters to you, and what you want to say to the world.

Thank you for your kind words. I am so grateful that you check the blog….and find it worth commenting upon. Strange, you know….I didn’t feel brave (though I thank you for that)….I felt compelled. The images I created were totally different than what I thought I was going there to do. That is a lesson of course for photographers, but the deeper lesson was to GO and to remain open to what there was to experience, and then make the best photograph you can. It takes the pressure off a bit and I think it allows for greater creative expression. I’m satisfied with the imagery….and haunted by it as well. Thank you, again, for checking the blog. ~Keron

Wonderful imagery, Keron. I had relatives… many who perished…and some who survived, who has endured Auschwitz. I loved them dearly. Nothing even a lifetime of stories and images can perhaps create the fullest picture of their experiences. But we’re blessed to have the opportunity to see and experience it through your eyes, in your special way.

And I weep, again. This time there is solace from our connection.

As you say, I set out to make portraits. What I saw and felt while I was there was this silent conversation between the two places (Terezin and Auschwitz/Birkenau) The specter of the Death Camps loomed over all the residents of Terezin and was, for the vast majority, their final resting place. The numb of the cold and the ice was just another layer of torture and another layer of agony, though mute. This is why I chose to do what I did. I had to make the best photograph I could and so I set about doing it. This silent conversation rose up from what I felt.

my favorite image is the one of the troughs that were used as mass latrines and what the prisoners found to be their place of privacy. unbelievable to imagine have slabs with holes cut out and placed above horse feeding troughs used to toilets, but the germans wouldn’t go into this area from the stench. this was “privacy.”

the chill in this image, the bone-chllling horror along with the sense of being frozen is illustrated in how you chose to composite. i believe you found a way to illustrate what is not imaginable to portray. i was surprised by what you did only because i thought you went to make portraits.

of course, you did…hauntingly so….bravo.

I found your blog via the Pacific NW Art school. I’ve been waiting years to get into Arthur Meyerson’s class there, but was unable to attend this past year. Hopefully next year. How wonderful to be able to assist!
Your Auschwitz photos remind me of Jeffrey Gusky’s in his sad but excellent book Silent Places. He photographed former Jewish ghettos, graveyards, etc., in Poland. I can’t recommend it enough.
I’m enjoying your posts and your photos.

Wow, a very powerful story and history. The hoarfrost is almost the perfect clothing for the country side to wear for images with a reflection to this terrible past. As if, thoughts frozen in time, hang from the branches.

before photoshop, which images drew you and why? i have always liked b&w. it is simply my aesthetic. it is how i see. i don’t really understand color. once in san miguel, a friend saw me photographing orchids with b&w film and was aghast. he thought i was crazy. it never occurred to me to use color film. mary ellen mark once addressed this at a talk by saying that in her opinion, color photographs see the color first, and b&w see the subject. this would explain why i don’t use color very often! it baffles me, and i usually correct it improperly.

as you say, we photograph as we are. b&w is my choice.

Hey Wil,
Yesterday while editing and preparing the post a sharp-shinned hawk or falcon of some sort came and sat on the deck to watch me for nearly 5 minutes. I think he/she was a little dazed and confused as just prior to that a large bird hit a window at the front of the house. In any case, it was nice to see the bird up close and marvel at its sleekness and piercing eye. Of course I thought of you. Thanks for checking the blog! Hope to be on the East Coast next week. ~K
